Today on my Republican Blog: Happy Fathers Day! I owe the other half of my Republican state of mind to my dad. He’s always done what ever was necessary to provide for his family, never backed down from anything and always supported me (even thong I haven’t been the best son at times), so to my father: I love you. So before I go, I’d like to give a special thanks to my dad (lets go fishing), the RNC, the Missouri Republican Party, the Illinois Republican Party, the College Republican National Committee, the National Black Republican Association, the Wall Street Journal, KSDK Channel 5, and KTVI Fox 2 News. Rewind! The Genius of Leo Strauss: A Republican State of Mind (Attack of the Republican Blogs)
Today on my Republican blog: The genius of Leo Strauss. This is a very special treat for all of my Republicans. I know most of you are already well versed in the works of Leo Strauss and politics, so I decided to post this for all of the confused liberals who either misrepresent Leo Strauss’s teachings on purpose or just out of sheer ignorance. It’s an article from the June 7, 2003 edition of the New York Times. And guess who wrote it? Jenny Strauss Clay. I would think she would know her father a little better than anyone else. Just a bit of advice to my left leaning friends: go to Borders or get a library card and read one of Strauss’s books. I suggest you start with Natural Right and History. I know almost all of it’s going to go over your head at first, but don’t be discouraged. Read it again. And then read it again and again and again until it starts to make sense to you. And once you come to the realization that everything you’ve always believed in is false…that’s when the healing starts. At that point, the Republican Party won’t look so bad to you anymore. The Real Leo Strauss

Recent news articles have portrayed my father, Leo Strauss, as the mastermind behind the neoconservative ideologues who control United States foreign policy. He reaches out from his 30-year-old grave, we are told, to direct a ”cabal” (a word with distinct anti-Semitic overtones) of Bush administration figures hoping to subject the American people to rule by a ruthless elite. I do not recognize the Leo Strauss presented in these articles.
My father was not a politician. He taught political theory, primarily at the University of Chicago. He was a conservative insofar as he did not think that change is necessarily change for the better.
Leo Strauss believed in the intrinsic dignity of the political. He believed in and defended liberal democracy; although he was not blind to its flaws, he felt it was the best form of government that could be realized, ”the last best hope.” He was an enemy of any regime that aspired to global domination. He despised utopianism — in our time, Nazism and Communism — which is predicated on the denial of a fundamental and even noble feature of human nature: love of one’s own. His heroes were Churchill and Lincoln. He was not an observant Jew, but he loved the Jewish people and he saw the establishment of Israel as essential to their survival.
To me, what characterized him above all else was his total lack of vanity and self-importance. As a result, he had no interest in honors within the academy, and was completely unsuited to political ambition. His own earliest passion, he confessed, was to spend his life raising rabbits (Flemish Giants) and reading Plato.
He was first and foremost a teacher. He did not seek to mold people in his own image. Rather, he was devoted to helping young people see the world as it is, in all its misery and splendor. The objects of his teaching were the Great Books, those works generally recognized as the foundation of a liberal education. But that alone was not a sufficient reason for reading them.
He began where good teachers should begin, from his students’ received opinions, in order to scrutinize their foundation. At that time, as is still true today, academia leaned to the left; hence such questioning required an examination of the left’s tenets. Had the prevailing beliefs been different, they too would have been subject to his skeptical inquiry.
Among the received opinions of the time was an unquestioned faith in progress and science combined with a queasiness regarding any kind of moral judgment, or ”relativism.” Many young people were confused, without a compass, with nothing substantial to admire. My father’s turning them to the Great Books was thus motivated not merely by aesthetic or antiquarian interest, but by a search for an understanding of mankind’s present predicament: what were its sources and what, if any, were the alternatives? The latter he found in the writings of the ancient Greeks.
Furthermore, he insistently confronted his students with the question of the ”good life.” For him, the choice boiled down to the life in accordance with Revelation or the life according to Reason — Jerusalem versus Athens. The vitality of Western tradition, he felt, lay in the invigorating tension between the two.
My father saw reading not as a passive exercise but as taking part in an active dialogue with the great minds of the past. One had to read with great care, great respect, and try, as he always said, to ”understand the author as he understood himself.” Today this task, admittedly difficult and demanding, is dismissed in fashionable academia as impossible. Rather, we are told, each reader inevitably constructs his own text over which the author has no control, and the writer’s intentions are irrelevant.
The fact is that Leo Strauss also recognized a multiplicity of readers, but he had enough faith in his authors to assume that they, too, recognized that they would have a diverse readership. Some of their readers, the ancients realized, would want only to find their own views and prejudices confirmed; others might be willing to open themselves to new, perhaps unconventional or unpopular, ideas. I personally think my father’s rediscovery of the art of writing for different kinds of readers will be his most lasting legacy.
Although I was never a student of my father’s, I sat in on a class of his in the 1960′s; I think it was on Xenophon’s ”Cyropaedia.” He was a small, unprepossessing and, truth be told, ugly man (daughters are their parents’ worst critics), with none of the charisma that one associates with ”great teachers.” And yet there was something utterly charming. One of the students would read little chunks of the text, and my father would comment and call for discussion. What marked this class was a combination of an engagement with questions of the highest seriousness (in this case, what is the best form of government) with the laughter of intellectual play.
It was magic. If only the truth had the power to make the misrepresentations of his achievement vanish like smoke and dust.
Rewind! Don’t Argue with (Liberal Democrat) Fools: A Republican State of Mind pt.2
Today on my Republican blog: A wise man once told me not to argue with fools; because from a distance, no one can tell who is who. This is entirely directed at my liberal friends (my Republican friends already know this concept), so libs pay attention. When you liberal democrats try to debate your trite and vapid points, have you ever noticed that you consistently exhibit the same behaviorisms and tactics when you come to the realization that you’ve lost? Allow me to show you the fallacies of logic and rhetoric. Does any of this sound familiar?
Common fallacies of logic and rhetoric:
• Ad hominem – attacking the arguer and not the argument.
• Argument from “authority”.
• Argument from adverse consequences (putting pressure on the decision maker by pointing out dire consequences of an “unfavourable” decision).
• Appeal to ignorance (absence of evidence is not evidence of absence).
• Special pleading (typically referring to god’s will).
• Begging the question (assuming an answer in the way the question is phrased).
• Observational selection (counting the hits and forgetting the misses).
• Statistics of small numbers (such as drawing conclusions from inadequate sample sizes).
• Misunderstanding the nature of statistics (President Eisenhower expressing astonishment and alarm on discovering that fully half of all Americans have below average intelligence!)
• Inconsistency (e.g. military expenditures based on worst case scenarios but scientific projections on environmental dangers thriftily ignored because they are not “proved”).
• Non sequitur – “it does not follow” – the logic falls down.
• Post hoc, ergo propter hoc – “it happened after so it was caused by” – confusion of cause and effect.
• Meaningless question (“what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?).
• Excluded middle -considering only the two extremes in a range of possibilities (making the “other side” look worse than it really is).
• Short-term v. long-term – a subset of excluded middle (“why pursue fundamental science when we have so huge a budget deficit?”).
• Slippery slope – a subset of excluded middle -unwarranted extrapolation of the effects (give an inch and they will take a mile).
• Confusion of correlation and causation.
• Straw man – caricaturing (or stereotyping) a position to make it easier to attack.
• Suppressed evidence or half-truths.
• Weasel words – for example, use of euphemisms for war such as “police action” to get around limitations on Presidential powers. “An important art of politicians is to find new names for institutions which under old names have become odious to the public”.
These are all rules that we learned as children (on the right) of how to detect when you’ve won a debate or an argument against a liberal. So yes, if we (on the right) come off as a little bit arrogant or dismissive, it’s only because we know that your point and premise are both invalid and not even worth discussing. Why would we continue have a discourse with you? It’s pointless! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts. Somehow people on the left always seem to reverse that actuality. Sorry for this post being so short, but I just had to bring you liberal democrats back to reality and remind my Republican friends of why it’s so frustrating talking to anyone on the left. An Oldie but Goodie: Teldar Paper- Why Greed Is Good (Attack of the Republican Blogs from 03/03/09)
Today on my Republican blog: Teldar Paper. I already know that those of you born after 1985 might not get the reference of this post, but it comes from the best movie ever made- Wall Street. So today I present to you the great words of the fictional character Gordon Gekko (based on the real life “Chainsaw Al” Dunlap). “The point is ladies and gentlemen… is that greed, for the lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed in all of it’s forms: greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind, and greed; you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.” I hope I just gave you liberals a little motivation. Lets Take A Ride! (Standard and Poor’s drops the hammer on GM and Chrysler) Attack of the Republican Blogs
Today on my Republican blog: Let’s take a ride. Today, I heard a very interesting story on the news this afternoon. It seems that even after being bailed out by the government (with taxpayer money); General Motors and Chrysler had several of their ratings cut by credit ratings agency Standard & Poor’s. Apparently, they have their own predictions about both companies’ future performances in the automotive market and the prospect of their future plans to file for bankruptcy. They also took it a step further, stating that creditors for both companies can expect to take losses if and when they both default. Nice. Chrysler, who’s expected to merge with Italian automaker Fiat, is purportedly expected to be the worse of the two automakers. S&P analyst Gregory Maddock recently said “We believe that if they (Chrysler) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, many of its assets and operations would be sold in discrete transactions over time, while other segments may be closed”. Nice. Now, let’s talk about General Motors a little bit. GM faces a government imposed deadline of June 1st to get concessions from its stakeholders, unions and other sources. Today is April 10th people! Unless we get a miracle this Easter; I don’t see that happening. Chrysler’s deadline is even tighter, being due on May 1st, to seal the deal with Fiat. The S&P doesn’t have much faith in them either; noted by the prediction that Chrysler will be filing for bankruptcy by “the end of April or thereafter”. Once again…nice. As anyone who owns any stock in those companies can attest too: the last thing you want to hear is that your shares have been downgraded to “junk bond” status (Charter Communications anyone?). But to all my investors: hold out hope. It’s always darkest before the dawn. Be patient and invest smart; we’ve all seen what Citigroup has done in the past three weeks. Meet Me In St. Louis (just not on Metro): Attack of the Republican Blogs and why we have to get Democrats out of office on April 7th
Today on my Republican blog: The aftermath from the Metro service cuts. This post is dedicated to all of the St. Louis and Illinois metro east readers of my blog. To everyone around the country and the world who happen to read my blog and have never been to St. Louis; allow me to explain to you what Metro is. Metro, previously Bi-State, is the mass transit system in the St. Louis metro area. Metro operates the bus lines and the Metrolink (our light rail train line), that thousands of Missouri and Illinois residents depend on to get to and from work everyday- at least until yesterday. On March 30th, massive service cuts began that made a multitude of workers either late or unable to show up for work at all. Why did this happen? Years of mismanagement, wasteful spending and a democrat run government that refused to do anything to stop it. As anyone who lives in West County knows, the Metrolink extension to Shrewsbury was a complete waste of money and really didn’t help anyone. Had they extended the line up hwy 40 west to the Ballas bus station, we might not be enduring the torture of the hwy 40 construction. Does anyone remember how fun it was trying to get downtown on the 4th of July last year? Yet Metro still kept asking for more taxpayer money and continually increasing their fares. And what did they end up doing? Cutting their service anyway. What’s even worse is the fact that Illinois and St. Louis city residents who happen to work in the county will now have to either quit their jobs, hope to find a carpool or take a cab. This is exactly what happens when you put democrats in any form of office: problems for everyone. And also to all my friends who live in north city and north county- what has the Democratic Party done for you lately? Or ever? Did you forget that St. Louis is always in the top 5 cities in the nation in terms of the murder rate? Forgot about leading the nation in sexually transmitted diseases? What about your vacant houses? Your unemployment rate? Your school system? Why does all of this perpetually occur? I think you already know the answer to that. I hope you realize that the people you put in office are the ones responsible for fixing these issues. How’s that been working out so far? The Democratic Party has been doing absolutely nothing to correct these situations for decades. So unless you’re planning on moving to West County; I would strongly suggest that you vote Republican. For some bizarre reason, you keep electing democrats as your alderman, mayors and so on and so on. What do you think is going to change? Allow me to give you the definition of insanity:

Why do you think that south city is better maintained than north city even though you both share the same tax base? Central West End anyone? The Loft District? Come on people! Can I Get an F? Can I Get a U? A Liberal State of Mind pt.5: Attack of the Republican Blogs
Today on my Republican Blog: I just have to briefly discuss a topic I’ve never addressed before: misguided liberals who happen to own computers and have also started their own blogs. If any of you (democrats) haven’t noticed yet, everything we (republicans) said was going to happen is now happening. How do you like your new tax hikes? How do you like the increased deficit? Have you looked at your paycheck lately? Checked on your stocks in awhile? Want to talk about the financial bailouts? I hate to repeat myself…but we told you so. On a federal, state and local level, democrats are busy ruining your city, your state and your country. So the next time you decide you attack Republicans- just remember that you brought this all on yourself. But don’t worry; the new GOP is coming to save the day. We’re all young and we’re coming to make things right (get it). It will be a new era in 2012. Listen to The Don: The Teflon Don pt.8
Today on my Republican blog: A special message to all of my Illinois residents: You should’ve listened to the Don…The Teflon Don, Rod Blagojevich, that is. As those of you who’ve read my previous posts about him already know, my opinion of him has recently changed. What I once thought was his bizarre conspiracy theory has now turned out to be fact. Illinois lawmakers were actually trying to kick him out of office so they could raise taxes. And once they succeeded; what did they do? Raise taxes! Former Gov. Blagojevich had it right the whole time. Illinois taxpayers should’ve listened to the Don from the start. It turns out that he really was on your side the whole time. In a statement that he released on Friday, Blagojevich noted that an income tax increase he’d been opposing for six years took just six weeks for new Gov. Pat Quinn to support. That to me sounds like maybe the Don was right. Especially since also on Friday, Gov. Quinn confirmed that he does plan to seek an income tax increase. Everyone should’ve listened to the Don. And by the way, how do you Illinois smokers like your .62 cent tax increase on cigarettes? If you do…keep supporting democrats and see what other fun things they’ll find to raise taxes on. Your beer? Your cable or satellite service? The tax you pay to register a new vehicle? The sales tax you pay at whatever stores you frequent? Your property tax? What’s next? The liberal state of mind is a black whole in the galaxy of reality and if you keep supporting the liberal agenda you’ll soon find that out. So, congratulations for getting rid of the one democrat who (secretly) shared Republican values and tried to stop tax raises in favor of a typical democrat who couldn’t wait to raise your taxes at the first available opportunity. This is just one of the many great (self-defeating) decisions made by Illinois residents over the decades. But anyway, to all my Republican political blogs and bloggers, to all my Libertarian political blogs and bloggers, and to all my Democrat blogs and bloggers (vote Republican in 2010 and 2012 and let the sun come out): Let your voice be heard. Gov. Blagojevich: The Teflon Don
Today on my Republican blog: Happy New Years to all my fellow Republican bloggers, my Libertarian bloggers and even my Democrat bloggers (I know you read me too). True to form, your party has managed to squeeze out one last scandal before 2009 rang in. Case in point: Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, on Dec. 30th, appointed former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to fill the senate seat once held by Barack Obama. But that’s not even the most interesting part of the story! At the end of the press conference to announce his appointment, Gov. Blogojevich turned to reporters and with one statement illustrated the literal textbook definition of hubris: “Feel free to castigate the appointer but don’t lynch the appointer. I am not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing.” I am not making this up; go to youtube.com and type in his name and you can see the video footage from WGN in Chicago. So to my Democrat bloggers: Can one of you please explain this to me? With less than 48 hours left in 2008, your party managed to fit in one last scandal? Seriously? Hours of wiretaps confirming his pay to play politics? Trying to sell a senate seat? Years of allegations of wrongdoing? This guy must truly believe he’s the teflon don…or he’s got brass b*lls. Here’s a fun fact: Burris gave more than $20,000 to Gov. Blagojevich’s campaign fund and Burris’s consulting company has also received more than $290,000 in state contracts from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Don’t believe me? Google it. If this is how the Democrat Party ends the year, what chance do you have against us in 2009? Let me answer that one for you: NONE! I told you on my first post, the Republicans are coming back strong! We’re getting ready everyday to take the country back in 2012. So to all my Republican bloggers, my Libertarian bloggers (move to the right a little), my College Republicans (what’s up Wash U), my Missouri Republicans, my Illinois Republicans and all Republicans around the United States- let’s make it happen! My New Years Resolution? Remain Resolute!
Today on my Republican blog: I’ve made my list of new years resolutions and I could only focus on one: remain resolute. I know we had a bad year, but the silver lining is that we can now regroup and prepare for 2012. So to my fellow Republicans, on 12/31/08 at 11:59pm… get ready to go! 2009 is the year we start rebuilding and focus on making a real change in our local, state and federal government for the next election cycle. I’m certain the Democrats (as proven) will make a myriad of mistakes, bad decisions and outright scandal in the next 2 to 4 years – so we should be ready to attack on all fronts. So once again, I hope that you’ve all had a merry Christmas; I hope you enjoy your new years eve; but remember: Jan 1st is go time! So get on your Republican blogs, your Libertarian blogs, your Democratic blogs (prepare your rebuttals), and lets get ready for 2012!
Can we bring back the GOP in 2012?
Republicans unite! I set up this blog today as what I hope will one day be the definitive forum for young Republicans of all kinds. Despite our efforts, we still got destroyed in November. I personally think it’s because we were still using the same outdated model, the same old tactics and the same early eighties thinking we learned from our parents. It wasn’t the liberals that sunk the ship; it was our party not adjusting to change that was the iceberg. Didn’t we all get that Titanic sinking feeling as we watched on election night and days thereafter as election results were broadcast 24/7? Watching Fox News (the band that continued to play as the ship sunk) like befuddled passengers only wanting to hold on to their last shred of dignity before it all ends? Well, we now all see what the results were for being hostages to the past. From local, state, and federal elections we got our asses handed to us for one specific reason: Republicans believing that that if we believe something doesn’t exist: then it doesn’t exist. Unfortunately, most Americans decided that rising gas prices, a recession (yes…recession), job losses, failing public education, a horrific housing market……I could go on. But, what’s the solution? Us! All of us between 18-30 are the future of the party. From the younger members of that age range doing what they can do as they arrive to college in the fall; to the later of us with careers that not only give us chances to speak some truth to our coworkers, but also the income to donate to our party and support our local candidates. But, first a little background about me. I’m 29, an Account Manager by trade and a supporter of both the Missouri and Illinois GOP. I contribute to campaigns on both sides of the river (because I live in St. Louis and it’s less than a few miles from Illinois) whenever I can, and as evidenced by the debacle of the St. Louis public school system and the recent Illinois Gov. Blagojevich scandal, it’s pretty clear we have to get these Democrats out of office at every level of government. I encourage anyone who wants to take our party into the future, please post here early and often! And get everyone you know to start their own Republican Blogs if they haven’t already. If we’re not fully organized, united and funded by 2011, we can forget about winning anything in 2012.
